Of all the laws and regulations enacted to protect mobile phone consumers over the last 20 years, mobile number portability has been one of the biggest. This policy gives consumers the ability to change their mobile service provider without changing their phone number, and it’s been crucial in ensuring competition and a race for quality and service availability among mobile operators.
At Syniverse, from our unique vantage point at the center of the mobile ecosystem, where we connect thousands of mobile service providers and other businesses, we’ve played a central role in assisting operators with implementing mobile number portability with our IPX Network, and we recently began our newest chapter. We were chosen to help three major operators in the Philippines, Globe Telecom, Smart Communications, and Dito Telecommunity, bring mobile number portability to the country’s 173 million-plus mobile connections.
Last week, I had an opportunity to discuss some of the challenges and rewards of this work with ABS-CBN News Channel of the Philippines in an interview that I invite you to watch below. Mobile number portability can involve some complex behind-the-scenes work, but the results that include increased competition and higher-quality services for consumers are well worth the effort. Syniverse looks forward to helping the Philippines achieve this and continuing to provide these connectivity services to other countries.
