With every new generation of a mobile platform, Mobile Network Operators (MNOs) have become keenly aware of the pressures to evolve their networks. But they are also aware of the time, resources, and costs that they have to incur as a result. This is especially true of 5G.
As MNOs see use cases growing, spurring greater interest in 5G capabilities, they also know that this transition will open opportunities to capture value from new 5G use cases and widespread adoption of the Internet of Things (IoT). However, these new use cases come at a cost. MNOs are acutely aware that they must raise their infrastructure investments to upgrade their technology to meet the expanded needs of 5G.
For many MNOs looking to advance to the 5G mobile network, the option to retire their legacy networks including 2G and 3G have become a critical decision point. By retiring these networks, a mobile operator can save considerable time and money by eliminating the need to provide maintenance and redistribute precious resources. The continued maintenance of legacy equipment is expensive and becomes increasingly costly as this infrastructure continues to depreciate. They are also able to reallocate spectrum from these aging networks and apply this freed-up bandwidth to their 5G services.
But as we continue to discuss, this creates a service gap. By retiring 3G networks, MNOs put themselves at risk of losing inbound revenues in addition to suffering deflated user experiences with outbound roaming. This is a result of not being able to support inbound roamers whose home networks have yet to support VoLTE roaming. And for an operator’s own subscribers, they also may be subject to a poor experience as they are limited to roaming only to operators that have implemented VoLTE roaming services.
Syniverse’s Evolved Mobility was designed to allow MNOs the ability to mitigate all the risks associated with retiring a legacy network while moving to a new 5G network. Evolved Mobility considers the concerns of having to deal with supporting a 3G network away from the MNO. This saves valuable time, resource, and cost. With unmatched experience in designing products and solutions that meet the needs of today’s MNO, along with an extensive list of VoLTE roaming interconnections, Syniverse has been able to develop an unparalleled VoLTE experience worldwide.
In the linked tech talk video, Brian Beach, Syniverse Senior Director of Product, quickly explains how Evolved Mobility helps mobile operators save money, generate revenue, and focus their attention and efforts on 5G.
