Syniverse’s “People Behind the Tech” takes a look at some of the many professionals who make technology work for our company and our customers.
What do you do at Syniverse?
I’m Director of Syniverse’s new Global Services organization, a group that offers a variety of managed and consultative services to help businesses simplify and streamline the management of their many connections and exchanges taking place every day between people and devices. I work at our headquarters in Tampa, Florida, have been at Syniverse just over eight years, and previously held positions in areas related to our operational excellence, implementation, business efficiency management, and compliance services.
What are you working on this month?
Focusing on the growth of Global Services. We’re working on expanding the ways we address customer pain points and solve business problems through the reduction of operational costs and creation of new revenue-generating capabilities. Simply put, our goal is to take the in-house expertise we’ve developed over 30 years and create value for our service provider and enterprise customers. As Global Services ramps up to do this now, it’s an extremely busy but exciting time for all of us on the team.
What parts of your current projects interest you the most?
The opportunity to come in on the ground floor of a brand-new Syniverse business and play a key role its growth. Starting Global Services is a lot like starting any new venture. You come out of the gates strong and hit the ground running, you come up against and overcome day-to-day obstacles, and you see it all come together after enough time and hard work are put behind a solid business plan. We expect Global Services to be a large part of our business in coming years, and it’s rewarding to be right in the thick of its high-growth phase now.
What’s one of the most valuable lessons you’ve gained during your career in tech?
No matter how experienced or knowledgeable you may be in any one area, our industry moves so fast that you have to make it a priority to stay up with the newest technologies. This is crucial for not only being prepared to integrate these new technologies, but for being able to adapt current technologies to work with the new ones.
What’s been one of your best moments at Syniverse?
Honestly, there are so many, it’s hard to choose. I’ve had the opportunity to work with some really talented people and some exceptional leaders. Although it may sound biased, if I had to choose a best moment now, I would pick the project I’m involved with now, having the opportunity to be a part of the launch of Global Services and work with my manager, Leigh Ann Polverelli, President of Global Services and longtime leader of many of Syniverse’s customer support and operations organizations.
Tell us about your technology lifestyle. What’s your favorite personal technology?
We have a lot of computers and gaming consoles in our house, but my favorite technology is, not surprisingly for a guy from a company whose heritage is in mobile, my phone. It’s an LG V30 that has an amazing camera, connects me to the world in many ways, allows me to keep an eye on my kids, and lets me stay up on my favorite shows. Just 15 years ago, it would have been difficult to imagine a device that would have the ability to stream massive data, connect with others, and protect our family.
What do you like to do outside of work?
Go to the movies, attend sporting events — especially Ohio State University football games! – and watch my kids do what they do best.
Favorite vacation?
Family trips to Gatlinburg, Tennessee, where on one trip we found out my wife was pregnant with our son. Another fond memory from there is of my daughter, at four months old, taking her picture with the same American Indian that I did as a kid in Cherokee, North Carolina. Another favorite vacation is one that my wife got me for my birthday last year, which was a set of tickets to a football game to see Ohio State University play the University of Michigan in a classic college rivalry known as “the Game.”

Good to Great, by Jim Collins.
Any three dinner guests?
Johnny Bench, Jackie Robinson and Urban Meyer.

He is a seasoned professional with 20 years experience in technology, consulting, professional services, and solutions selling. His current focus is on creating ROI for our carrier customers by looking for new revenue and cost avoidance in their roaming business.
